Laterna Magica

I'm thrilled to have some of my animated GIFs featured this month in a film festival! It's the Laterna Magica film festival in Marseille, France, presented by Fotokino.

Eight of my stop-motion GIFs (which I turned into movie files for this purpose) are being screened at La Crié, the Marseille National Theater, from December 5th through the 20th. More info here!

Cavey's American Cousins

I'm excited to be a part of the Cavey's American Cousins show!
This is a one-night pop-up show featuring custom Caveys, the original character by Holly of A Little Stranger. Holly invited me to create a custom Mochimochi-style Cavey, so I knitted up a gnome-ified Cavey! This guy is going to be available via a 7-day eBay auction starting this Saturday, November 3rd, and finishing the night of the show. See the Hey Cavey website for more info and updates.

"A Day in Mochimochi Land" GIF Series

My swell agents at CWC-i just wrapped up a six-part email series featuring my animated GIFs and character profiles. You can now see all six animations and their very silly captions on the CWC-i website. Here's one of my favorites:

Check out the Character section in my portfolio for more gnomes, snowmen, and zombies!

Pictoplasma Talk in NYC this November

UPDATE: Due to Hurrican Sandy, the 2012 NYC conference has been postponed until early in 2013.

I'm thrilled to announce that I will be speaking at the Pictoplasma NYC conference this November!

Date and time are TBA, but I will be presenting my knitted character designs and installations from the past few years in a slide show and talk. I'm planning to emphasize what it means to design a character that is meant to be recreated and repurposed by knitters for their own use. It's a fascinating creative dynamic that I'm thinking about more and more these days.

Details about the NYC conference are on the Pictoplasma website, including an early bird offer on the conference pass if you buy it before September 15th. If you work in a creative field or you're just a character enthusiast, you'll want to check it out!

Super-Scary Mochimochi Coming September 18th

My third book of knitted toy patterns, Super-Scary Mochimochi, is set to be released on September 18th!

Super-Scary Mochimochi is packed with weird, silly, colorful creatures that are guaranteed not to scare you at all really. Knitters can let their imaginations run wild, with fun twists on classic monsters and creepy new species too. There's also a section that lets you put together your own "mix n match" monster, so knitters get to play mad scientist!

You can pre-order Super-Scary Mochimochi from Amazon right now, or you can get it in bookstores in the US starting September 18th. I'll also have signed copies available in my online shop once it's released.

I'm honored to have my work featured in The Character Compendium, a beautiful new book of character art published by Pictoplasma.

Pictured are pieces from my 2011 show Mochimochi Worlds, held at Smallspace in Berlin, and Mochimochimochimochimochi, a 2011 installation shown at the Lion Brand Yarn Store in NYC.

Thank you Pictoplasma!

Mochis on Martha Stewart

The Martha Stewart Show has sadly come to an end, but I was honored to have my book Teeny-Tiny Mochimochi featured on of the last episodes.

A big thank-you to the great people who worked at The Martha Stewart Show, and also to Kim Small at Random House for making this happen!

Mushroom Hop GIF

My gnome obsession continues, as does my animated GIF obsession. This one was accomplished using a toothpick stuck into the background to make the little guy hop!
